Why Hydraulic Lifts?

A detailed study conducted by Blain Hydraulics (a world leader by market share) has shown that the hydraulic elevator is the safest elevator type against natural disasters like seismic movements etc. Misleading arguments against hydraulic elevators are mainly limited to exaggerated energy consumption and environmental issues. We have evaluated these claims below.

  1. Drawbacks of traction MRLs –
    • Genuine installation costs for the same performance are estimated to be 15-25% higher than the hydraulic units. (MRL installations might be initially offered at low prices to win contracts with overblown service charges later).

    • Maintenance is difficult because machine room is located in the headroom of the shaft or on or under the cab. It is costly as well since technology is  patented and servicing may only be performed by the original installer or by their service partners.

    • Safety Requirements becomes complicated since each expertise and is difficult to reach in the shaft.

  2. Energy consumption of hydraulic elevators –

    • The motor size used in both traction and hydraulic is the same.

    • The cost of energy consumption in a hydraulic elevator is lower since it does not consume energy when traveling down. It comes down due to gravity.

  3. Low Noise hydraulic elevators – Hydraulic elevators are best suited for residential installations since the power unit can be installed away from the shaft, outside the home. This enables a low noise operation of the lift.

  4. Lower initial cost - Substantially lower initial cost of equipment and its maintenance. It is generally estimated that the initial investment is 15 to 25% less than for traction installations.

  5. More effective building space utilization –

    • Hydraulic elevator uses about 12% less hoistway area than traction unit since

    • No overhead machine room

    • It can easily be installed in existing or new buildings without a shaft

    • Best for installations where future floors may need to be added to the building.

  6. High reliability on failure free operation –

    • Does not require experts for rescue operations.

    • Elevator controls can be adjusted without working in the shaft.

  7. Environmentally Safe - Better for the environment since the hydraulic power unit during down travel can serve to lower temperature in the basement of buildings.

Overall, Hydraulic elevators have unbeatable properties such as breakdown free operation, low initial cost, easy installation and high comfort. Hydraulic elevators also have the best records in safety and servicing costs.
